There are some interesting places in St. Louis. Then there are also dangerous ones like the roads and intersections where accidents commonly occur.

Towing companies get calls for various reasons at various locations. Some might think that they are only needed in far and isolated roads but, their services also come in handy in the busiest streets and intersections of St. Louis.

Car accidents can happen in intersections and in this post, we’ll tell you about the intersections in St Louis that have the worst reputation when it comes to car accidents. Whenever you drive through them, make sure to take extra precautions because they are notorious for car accidents.

1. Clarkson Road & Manchester Road at Ellisville

Dubbed as the most dangerous intersection in the St. Louis area is the one found on Clarkson Road and Manchester Road. An estimate of 155 crashes happened at this intersection up until 1999 and the numbers are still rising.

It has been fitted with a red light camera to help with safety. If drivers know that they are being watched, they are likely to drive more carefully. These cameras were also used to issue tickets to those who run the red light. In 2017, those red-light cameras were put down. However, there are talks about putting them up again just recently.

Location on Google Maps

2. Fee Fee Road and Olive Boulevard in Creve Coeur

Coming in second place to the number of crashes is the intersection between Fee Fee Road and Olive Boulevard.

It’s a road that’s quite near office parks, that’s why it can get a lot of traffic especially during peak hours.

Location on Google Maps

3. Mason Rd. And Olive Boulevard

This intersection comes in third place and it is where the Barnes-Jewish Hospital is located. Due to the number of accidents, the intersection has received a lot of work to improve safety. However, that doesn’t mean you should let your guard down while on these roads. However busy or not the streets are, you should always be alert and stay focused to prevent accidents.

Location on Google Maps

Avoiding Accidents At Intersections

Accidents at intersections are some of the worse and fatal ones. Extra precautions should always be taken when crossing intersections. Here are a few things to remember to avoid accidents at intersections.

Remember that not all people are aware that you have the right-of-way – Even if you have the right-of-way if the other drivers are not aware of it or just don’t care, it is still possible to meet an accident. In that case, it is best to drive defensively to avoid fatal crashes.

Double-check when turning right on red – If you’re turning right on red, you have to be absolutely sure that there isn’t a single car coming from the other direction that’s turning left.

Watch Out For Rushing Vehicles – Looking intently at the green light and waiting for it to light up without looking at the road can get you into trouble. Some vehicles rush through the yellow light in the hopes of making it. If you immediately run the green light and there’s a rushing car, you can collide with that and meet an accident.

Watch Out For Pedestrians Too – The intersections aren’t just a place for cars, there are pedestrians or people on bikes too. You should always keep an eye on them and take precautions because you can do some serious damage in case you bump or crash into them.

When most people think of St Louis, The Arch, the blues, BBQ, and maybe hockey come to mind. But did you know that the St Louis region is home to one of the most important archaeological sites in North America?

Located a few miles directly across the Mississippi River from modern St. Louis, Missouri, you’ll find a series of mysterious mounds, the largest rising some 220 feet into the air.

Welcome to the world-renowned Cahokia Mounds.

Advanced and Peaceful

These Mounds got their name from the Cahokia tribe, which was a tribe of Illiniwek people who lived in the area when in the 17th Century the first French explorers arrived there.

At it’s height the Cahokia population in the area to be between 10 and 20 thousand people and was a peaceful agricultural, and Chiefdom led societies that were common in many of the Indian Tribes in the Midwest region. While it’s been surmised that the hamlets and villages fanned out many miles, the massive mounds were located at the center.

Representing one of the most complex remains of the northern Pre-Columbian the area was settled in the Mississippian period from 700 – 1400 AD. The expansive site covers about 9 square kilometers or 3.5 square miles which is equal to 2200 acres or 890 hectares. With 80 mounds, the site is massive, but the actual ancient city was in fact much larger than this area.

When it was occupied, the Cahokia Mounds had almost 120 mounds and covered an area of approximately 1600 hectares or 3950 acres. and width of this mound it is 30m tall, 290m length, and 255m wide respectively.

Arial View of the Cahokia Mounds

The Cahokia Were Coppersmiths

In 2002 till 2010 because of the excavation near mound 34, a copper workshop was revealed in this area. Originally discovered by archaeologist Gregory Perino in the 1850s but its exact location was lost or forgotten for around 60 years. While there are other Mississippian sites as well that can be found in the U.S, what makes this site different from all those historic sites is the fact that it contains a copper workshop, which the other sites do not have.

Protected Status

Realizing the significance of the site, the Cahokia Mounds were first protected by the Illinois state in 1923, the same year when the legislature announced that the state park would be purchased. The state government in turn designated the Cahokia Mounds and a State Historic Site in 1979 and is a designated site for protection, and also a National Historic Landmark. Finally in 1982 the Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site was included in the list of the 23 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the United States.

The Illinois Historic Preservation Division administers the site since it is open to the public site and the Cahokia Mounds Museum Society supports the site. The central focus of the city and also the largest structure of the Cahokia Mounds is the Monks Mound.

The Monks Mound is 10 stories tall, with four terraces and hence it becomes the largest man-made mound on earth located at the north of Mexico.

Living in St Louis, it’s hard not to notice the grandeur of America’s tallest memorial, the Saint Louis Arch, which measures an imposing 630-foot high and dominates our skyline. Also known as the “Gateway to the West”, it’s listed as tallest arch in the world.

While the monument is obviously large and impressive in it’s architecture, you might be unaware of some mind blowing facts about St Louis Arch from it’s concept to the actual model.

It’s just as wide as it is tall

Yeah! You read it right, this arch is as wide as it is tall. Just like its height of 630-foot, the wide base is also 630-foot. Such design with legs wider than its upper section is labeled as the weighted catenary.

No one died during the construction

We know that it sounds a bit weird but it’s the truth that no one died during the construction of this phenomenal monument. The firm that was assigned to construct this project predicted that around 13 people will die but the reality turns out to be pleasing.

The construction required only 2% of the predicted labor

It sounds a bit weird that how come this gigantic monument was constructed with 2% of the predicted labor number. Labors went wild when around only hundreds were called instead of 5000 predicted labor vacancies to build the Arch.

You can’t take the stairs

Although there are stairs to the top, visitors can’t use them as they are for emergencies and maintenance. A total of 1076 stairs will take you to the top only if you are among the engineers or workers.

Arch is heavy

The total weight of St Louis Arch is 43,220 pounds including the stainless steel, concrete layers, and all other components. Now stop daydreaming about being a superman and lifting this arch up, it’s hefty!

Eero died before the grand opening of this Arch

You heard it right, Eero, the designer of this monument didn’t see the this Arch come to life as he died of brain tumor in 1961 at the age of 51. The Arch was up four years after his death, isn’t life unjust sometimes?

Ever thought of climbing the Arch? You better not

In 1992 on September 14th a 25-year old man named John C. Vincent climbed to the top of St Louis Arch by using suction cups and parachuted back to the ground. John was charged with two crime, parachuting in a national park and climbing a national monument.

Attraction for millions

St Louis Arch is one of the most visited places by tourists with around four million visitors per year and around 1 million make it to the top of the Arch. So? Would you make it to the top or just watch like other 3 million people?

Foundation matters

This enormous monument’s foundation is approximately 60 feet deep to withstand the weight of 43,220 pounds so that this structure remains like this forever.
