Transporting heavy equipment, machinery, and oversized vehicles takes intensive planning and expertise to execute safely. As one of the largest heavy haul carriers in the St. Louis area, Reliable Guys Towing Service has decades of experience moving all types of large commercial loads. We understand that safely relocating heavyweight cargo requires diligent protocols and specialized equipment.

This comprehensive guide provides the information needed to successfully transport oversized loads. Each essential phase of planning and execution is outlined in detail. By following industry-leading practices, our trained transportation professionals ensure even the most challenging heavy haul projects are completed without issue.

Pre-Transport Planning

Before we hit the road, we’ve got a checklist to tackle. First up is making sure everything’s ready for a safe trip. We go over the cargo with a fine-tooth comb, checking weight distribution and how it’s all tied down. It’s not just about ticking boxes; it’s about making sure we don’t run into trouble later on. We document every check we do, so we’ve got a record that everything’s as it should be.

We know that a load that’s not right can cause real problems. A forgotten check might mean a breakdown or worse, a dangerous situation on the road. That’s why our team of pros does a deep dive on every load, making sure nothing’s missed.

Equipment Selection

Choosing the right truck and trailer for the job isn’t a game of eeny, meeny, miny, moe. We match the load to the equipment, making sure we’ve got the right tools for the job. With our specialized gear – think adjustable axles and trailers built tough – we can handle the heavy stuff that regular rigs can’t.

We’re serious about this because using the wrong equipment isn’t just a bad idea; it’s a risk we’re not willing to take. And sometimes, we’ll bring along escort vehicles to keep oversized loads in check.

Safety Protocols

When it comes to safety, we don’t mess around. Every strap and bar used to secure the load is top-notch, rated way above what we’re carrying. We plan out where every strap goes, how tight it should be, and add extra support where it’s needed. And we don’t just slap on some lights and flags; we make sure everything that sticks out is marked and visible to everyone on the road.

Route Planning

Picking the right path is all about knowing what’s ahead. We look for anything that could get in the way – low bridges, narrow roads, you name it – and we plan around it. We talk to our customers and the local authorities to figure out the best time to make the move, so we dodge traffic jams and rush hour.

And just to be sure, we’ve got satellite tracking to keep an eye on our route, making sure we’re where we need to be when we need to be there.

Move Execution

All the planning leads to this – getting the load from A to B safely. Our drivers do a full check before we set off and get the lowdown on what they’re carrying. The escort team stays in touch by radio, making sure everything’s coordinated. We don’t rush; we take our time to get it right, especially when it comes to changing lanes or navigating tight spots.

Our customers are kept in the loop with updates on when we’ll arrive, and we’re there to help with the unloading too. After it’s all done, we check over everything one last time and ask for feedback to keep improving what we do.

Permitting Requirements

Every big move needs the right paperwork, and that’s something we’ve got down to an art. We figure out what permits we need, get the details sorted, and send off the requests with time to spare. We make sure every ‘i’ is dotted and every ‘t’ is crossed, so when it’s time to move, we’re good to go.

We use signs and pilot cars to keep other drivers in the know about our wide load, and we follow all the rules – speed limits, time of day, you name it. If there’s a last-minute detour needed, we’re on it.

Need expert heavy load transport in Saint Louis at a great price? Check out what our heavy duty towing services have to offer…

Your Heavy-Duty Lifeline in Saint Louis

Permitting Requirements

Acquiring the necessary permits is an important regulatory part of planning a large transport. Our assertion is that fully permitted loads face less obstacles en route.

We assess each project to determine permitting needs from agencies like MoDOT. Loads exceeding width, length or weight limits on public roads mandate special transport authorization.

Permit applications require in-depth load and route details for approval. Requests are submitted well in advance of move dates to avoid processing delays. Validated permits and routing instructions travel with the driver and escorts.

Dynamic messaging signs alert motorists to wide load movements. Pilot cars shadow the widest edges as required. Reduced speed limits are obeyed, and time of day restrictions followed. Alternates address last-minute road work.

Planning for the Unexpected

When it comes to heavy hauling, even the best-laid plans can encounter unexpected challenges. At Reliable Guys Towing Service, we pride ourselves on our ability to adapt and manage the unforeseen. We’ve developed comprehensive strategies to ensure we’re ready for anything the road—or Mother Nature—might throw our way.

Anticipating Challenges

Our drivers and support teams are fully trained to manage incidents swiftly and efficiently. If there’s a vehicle breakdown or a road obstruction, we have protocols in place to secure the load and resume operations with minimal delay. Additionally Moving through populated areas requires sensitivity to local activity. We aim to transport during off-peak hours and stay in close contact with city officials to minimize impact and keep the public informed.

Weather Contingency Plans

We constantly monitor weather conditions and have a clear policy for halting operations if it becomes unsafe to continue. Our commitment to safety means we’ll delay transport rather than risk an accident in bad weather.

Communication is Key

We believe in transparency and keeping the customer informed at every stage. If unexpected delays or changes occur, we use the latest communication tools to provide timely updates, maintaining a clear and open channel with our clients.

Emergency Preparedness

Our fleet is equipped with all necessary emergency gear to handle any roadside emergencies. From safety triangles and fire extinguishers to first aid supplies, we’re prepared to tackle any issue that arises.

Traffic Coordination

Smooth Operation

For oversized loads that require careful navigation, we coordinate with local authorities, possibly involving controlled stops or temporary road closures, to ensure a smooth operation.

By integrating extensive planning for the unexpected into our heavy haul operations, Reliable Guys Towing Service ensures that your cargo reaches its destination not only on time but also with utmost care and safety.

Hello folks, this is Dave, owner of Reliable Guys Towing Service in Saint Louis. I’ve lived in the St. Louis area my whole life and up to this point have spent over two decades in the towing and transportation business. In that time I’ve seen the good, the bad, and the ugly in our industry, and today, I want to shed some light on a significant issue – aggressive and sometimes misleading tactics used by some tow truck drivers.

According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, these predatory practices are an issue nationwide, and I can tell you first-hand that the roads of Saint Louis are no exception.

Let’s learn more so you can protect yourself and loved ones on the roadways.

Understanding the Motivations

Some tow truck operators, often referred to as “chasers,” listen to police scanners and rush to accident scenes, hoping to cash in on someone else’s misfortune. They might pressure you at a vulnerable moment to get your car towed, then hit you with inflated charges.

The aggressive and misleading tactics used by theses tow truck operators and companies can be traced back to the profitable nature of the auto repair business, and relationships they have with other service providers:

Lucrative Business: Towing a vehicle from a collision scene can be quite profitable. In fact, it can be worth $600 to $800. This lucrative aspect of the business sometimes leads to aggressive competition among tow truck drivers, some of whom may resort to unscrupulous tactics to get a piece of the pie.

Misleading Practices: Some tow truck drivers have relationships with auto body or repair businesses. In some cases, they might even own these businesses themselves. They often use aggressive tactics to persuade accident victims to use these services. Some tow truck drivers may even receive kickbacks from auto body shops for bringing them business, which can range from $500 to $1000.

These practices are not only unethical but can also put a financial burden on car owners who are already dealing with the stress of a vehicle accident or breakdown. It’s important to be aware of these tactics and know how to protect yourself.

Spotting the Red Flags

Here are some warning signs:

Unsolicited Arrival: If a tow truck shows up at an accident scene uninvited, be wary. In many states, including Missouri, it’s illegal for a tow truck to arrive at an accident scene unless called by the police or one of the parties involved.

High-Pressure Tactics: If a tow truck operator is pressuring you to make a quick decision or refusing to fully answer your questions, these are red flags.

Lack of Clear Pricing: A reputable towing company should be straightforward about their pricing. If they’re evasive about costs or if the rate seems too good to be true, proceed with caution.

Protecting Yourself

So, how can you protect yourself? Here are some tips:

When it comes time to transporting your car, truck, or motorcycle over long distances you want to make sure that you’re working with a reputable and reliable company. Here are a few tips for finding a good auto transport company to tow your car:

Do Your Homework

First things first – do your research! Look for companies online with positive reviews from past customers. Next, ask around. Talk to your friends and family members about their experiences with auto transport companies, and see if they have any recommendations.

Finally, get quotes from several different companies before making a decision. This will give you a good idea of what the market rates are, and will help you find the best deal possible.

Feeling Out Potential Transport Providers

Once you’ve paired down the list of potential companies, start reaching out to the business to inquire on their services. Be sure to take note of how they relate to you as a customer. Do they answer the phone? Are they polite and professional, or do they seem disinterested and inexperienced? More than likely this will be an indication of how they will perform the actual job.

Here’s some that will help you feel out the experience level of your selection:

Ask if the company has any recommendations for towing your vehicle. This will help ensure that they have experience in towing your specific model, and it will also give you peace of mind, knowing that they’ve towed cars like yours before.

Find out if the company is insured and licensed in your state. This will help ensure that they’re operating legally, and that your car will be covered by their insurance in case of an accident or other incident. If they aren’t licensed in your state, then you may want to find a different company.

Find out which carrier the company is using to transport your car. This information should be included in the written contract that you get prior to signing any documents or making a payment. You can also contact the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to get more information on a specific carrier.

Make sure the company’s vehicle transport equipment meets industry regulations. Most companies use enclosed transport carriers to ship your vehicle, but you should still ask about the equipment they will be using for your specific car.

Find out what happens if the vehicle is damaged during transport. Find out if the insurance will cover any additional costs, and whether or not the company will reimburse you for those costs. Most companies won’t reimburse you for damages on your side of the car, so don’t expect them to pay for damage on your end.

Ask about the company’s cancellation policy. Find out if they charge any last minute fees, and what your options are in case of inclement weather or some other unexpected problem. It’s a good idea to play it safe and avoid companies that charge last minute fees.

You’ll also want to find out if the company is insured and licensed in your state. This will help ensure that they’re operating legally, and that your car will be covered by their insurance in case of an accident or other incident. If they aren’t licensed in your state, then you may want to find a different company.

Costs, Fees, and Insurance Coverage

Another deciding factor will obviously be cost. Whether those costs are associated with the job itself, fees, or insurance costs – make sure you understand the total cost of the operation in order to have a complete picture of what the potential transportation providers. Here’s some great questions to ask related to auto transport charges…

Ask about storage and shipping costs. Find out how long your car will need to be stored at the company’s facility, and whether or not you’ll need to pay for storage after it’s been shipped. Most reputable companies will store your vehicle free of charge until it has been picked up by the new buyer or delivered back to you.

Inquire about taxes and registration fees. Find out if you’ll need to pay any taxes or additional registration fees once your car has been delivered to its new owner, and find out how much they will be so that you can budget accordingly.

Ask about additional fees. Some companies will charge additional fees for things like fuel surcharges, storage or prep charges, and delivery charges. Most reputable companies won’t do this, but it’s good to know whether or not your contract specifies any of these extra costs.

Before Signing A Contract…

Get a written estimate from and job contract from the final list of providers you’ve chosen. Once you’ve gotten quotes from several different companies, get everything in writing so you’ll have an official estimate to refer to later on.. At this point you should…

Read the contract carefully before signing anything. Make sure you understand all of the terms and conditions, and that you completely understand what you’re getting into.

If you’ll be paying for insurance coverage, make sure the contract specifies what type of insurance the company has.

Ask about the company’s payment options and policies. Find out what forms of payment they accept, and when you need to pay in order for everything to be covered. Most companies will accept cashiers checks, money orders, personal checks, credit cards and bank transfers as forms of payment.

Final Thoughts

Transporting a car or truck over many miles is not something to take lightly. That’s why it’s a good idea to take your time and methodically review any towing or auto transport company ahead of time to ensure you understand their services and are getting the best deal for your money. Thanks for reading!

ATRI or the American Transportation Research Institute has released their analysis of the top bottleneck areas for trucks. Last year in 2020, St. Louis, Missouri, specifically the intersection where I-44 meets I-64 and I-55, ranked 33rd on the list.

Recently, they released a similar analysis for 2021 and guess what? The same intersection is still on the list. Worst is that it is now in the top 8!

Intersections and trucks aren’t a great mix. Intersections already have a bad reputation for accidents and so do trucks. That’s because of their sheer size and limitations. Although you can avoid that specific intersection, it wouldn’t change the fact that there will still be trucks where you’re driving.

Avoid needing that towing service and getting into a serious accident. Here are some tips on how to drive around trucks. In that way you lessen the risk of accidents whether you’re at the intersection or not.

Don’t Cut Them Off Too Close

A truck is slow for a reason. They are huge and heavy plus it would be far more difficult to control them at faster speeds. That may be the reason why you want to pass them.

However, you don’t overtake just like you would with another car. That’s because they may not be able to see you due to their blind spots. Plus it would take time for the break to stop the huge truck.

If you are passing a truck, it would be best to wait until you see both of their headlights in your rear view mirror before you go in front of them. That would give a good distance and improve the chances that the truck driver sees you.

Sudden Breaks Should Be Avoided

In case you are in front of the truck, you should also be mindful about your breaking habits. Using your break abruptly isn’t a good idea whether you are in front of another car or a truck.

The risk of having bumped by the vehicle behind you increases when it is a truck that is following you. That’s because it’s much harder for huge vehicles to stop.

Know Their Blind Spots

Trucks have much larger blind spots than smaller vehicles. They can’t really see the sides of their vehicle especially on the passenger side. That’s why sometimes they won’t even know that a car is there.

Give Them Space

Whether the truck is behind or in front of you, you should give them space. That distance is very important when they use their brakes. Even if the truck driver has fast reflexes, the brakes won’t stop the heavy truck immediately. That distance can save you from being crushed by a humongous vehicle.

Be Cautious Around Them

Although most of the accidents involving trucks are due to their blind spots, you should still remain cautious even if you are positive that the truck driver can see you. That’s because something can still happen beyond their control.

Sometimes truck tires can come loose. Some trucks that have blown a tire can still be driven. However, those pieces of tires could be dangerous especially at fast speeds. They can hit your windshield and cause you to be distracted or surprised that you lose control over your vehicle.

Similarly, in winter time or while driving on slick roads, you should be aware of your distance. Even if the truck stops, you could end up sliding underneath the truck if you are too close. Defensive driving is best practiced in these situations.

Avoid Distractions

Whether it is your phone, changing the songs on your radio or eating, distractions while driving puts you at risk of accidents. This isn’t only true for those who are driving around trucks but also for all.

Car accidents among cars could just be as fatal as car accidents with trucks. Distracted driving is one of the many reasons why that can happen. It is best to focus on the road and on driving. The less distractions, the less risk of being in an accident.

Human beings, in general, are incredibly thoughtful creatures, they think logically and are for the most part good and kind to their fellow human beings. For some reason when we get behind the wheel of an automobile all that goes out of the window.

While we’ve managed to create some sort of semblance of order on our highways, the plain truth is that there are far too many accidents that can be directly attributed to driver error.

As a tow truck driver in St Louis I see the result with horrible daily accidents, traffic, and general mayhem on the streets, byways, and highways in-and-around STL.

A Better Way?

While all this mayhem might be good for business, I’d probably be the first to admit that there’s a better way. After some soul searching, I strongly believe that this “better way” will be powered by driver-less vehicles run by Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Although robots driving our cars seems like a frightening proposition, studies after studies have shown that a driverless future has the potential to reduce congestion and will almost certainly cut fatalities by more than 90%.

These are huge benefits worth looking into that could save millions of lives and improve the standard of living for many others.

So in a bit of a departure from my normal towing articles, I wanted to take some time to highlight cities that are starting to take the leap into a driverless future and talk about the benefits of this automation and get into some cities that are starting to apply the technology.

Driverless Vehicles Could Produce a Drastic Reduction in Emissions

Drive in any major city on the East Coast and it will become all-too apparent that the current transportation system in the US is highly inefficient. City populations are steadily growing and many of the roads in major cities are congested as a result.

Driverless vehicles could help solve that problem, as a recent study showed. The study looked at how many driverless cars would have to be in a city to handle the demand.

They divided the cars into two services, one service that would allow people to share a vehicle and one service that gives you your own private car. They determined that on this system people could be transported effectively with just 10 percent of the current vehicles.

To put it another way, applying the results of this study globally, automation could reduce the number of cars needed by 90 percent.

Almost a Reality in London

Driverless vehicles have been viewed as a technology that will only come about in the distant future. However, many companies are actively developing autonomous driving technology.

In London a company called Addison Lee is has conducted trials in Greenwich with NO accidents thus far (knock on wood). It is expected that their taxi service should be operational by 2021.

Scotland is Investing in the Technology

In Scotland the government is investing in driverless technology. They are planning to have driverless buses transport passengers from Fife to Edinburgh, a 14-mile-long route. Each bus can carry up to 42 passengers and can complete around 1,000 trips each week. Trials have already begun, and this could become a reality by the year 2021.

China Already has a Driverless Bus

In China a driverless bus has been operational since 2015. The bus takes passengers along a 20-mile-long route through a busy city. While a bus driver currently sits behind the wheel, they are only there for safety reasons.

Driverless Trains Already in Use in London

When thinking of driverless technology everyone automatically thinks of vehicles like cars and buses. However, automated trains may be easier to develop according to Australian company Transdev. This is shown by the fact that in London driverless trains are already in use. London has a driverless train transporting passengers along it’s Thames link line.

The technology can sense where other trains are and adjust speed accordingly, allowing the trains to travel closer together and, similar to the driverless buses in China, a trained human being oversees the train fleet with centralized software.

What are towing businesses to do?

Change is inevitable, and just like any other category, businesses need to adapt to the times or face extinction. Driverless vehicles could have numerous benefits for a public transit system. From Scotland to China, governments and companies alike are looking at automation technology to see how they can use it to benefit humanity in the future.

Thanks for reading and drive safe!

Getting into an accident in the middle of a drive is the usually the last thing on anyone’s list of activities. As the old saying goes, “Stuff happens”, and when it happens it’s a good idea to keep a level head about you in order to stay safe.

In general, there are a number of safety risks in case your car breaks down in the middle of a road, and these risks get bigger in case a road is bigger and busier, such as a highway.

Well in case you own a vehicle, know that the risk of a breakdown is always present regardless of your car’s condition. Hence, this is something that every driver has faced at least a few times in their lifetime.

However, for a new driver, a breakdown in the middle of the road can be a very overwhelming situation that is accompanied by a feeling of panic.

The standard procedure for a breakthrough on a highway is to coast towards the right, as far as your car. This is because you must get away from the road as quickly as possible in order to reduce the risk of getting hit. Atop that, it will be easier to get towed to a repair shop in case you are away from the traffic.

Once you are as far right as you could go, wait inside the car and give a towing assistance a call.

Now, it is not always necessary that you will have the time to coast to the far right of the road. In case this happens, the safest option is to stay inside the car and remain where you are. This is the safest option in case you are stuck in the middle of the road after a breakdown. However, to ensure that your hazard lights are left on. Also, in this condition, do not leave the vehicle at all! Give 911 a call if need may be. While 911 is mostly called on the roads in case of an accident or criminal activity, you may still be able to get the required assistance if that’s your only option. Essentially, 911 representatives may be able to get you in contact with a towing service nearby.

On the roads that are quieter with less traffic, you should essentially be able to get off and push your car towards the far right. You may as well get the assistance of people passing by if necessary. Once you are away from the path of the traffic, give your preferred towing company a call for assistance.

Nighttime breakdowns are, however, more complex. In this case, ensure that your hazard lights are on and exit from the passenger’s side in order to avoid getting hit.

Moreover, make use of reflectors or flares during the night in order to signal a hazard, while you wait for a towing truck to arrive on the spot. The prime job of the flares and reflectors would be to make yourself more visible in the dark.

It’s snow season.

For us tow truck drivers, that means icy roads, more accidents, and more cars and truck in ditches.

One of the most important, and overlooked skills in our business is learning how to correctly winching a car out of a ditch. It’s vitally important to stranded drivers, but if done incorrectly, can end up cost the customer money with a damaged vehicle, which equal bad press and liability for the towing service.

So today, we will explain everything there is to know about winching the right way.

Be prepared beforehand

Like any task that involves safety, being properly prepared is an important step. Make sure that the winch is properly spooled or else its efficiency will be reduced and there is a chance of it malfunctioning in the middle of the winching operation which is the last thing you want, and regularly check the winch to make sure it works properly and that the towing line is in good health.

From a personal gear perspective, have heavy duty gloves on hand as there is a good chance of getting blisters and cuts and you could even lose a finger if you are not careful, and make sure to wear all the rest of your personal safety equipment before setting off.

Determining the effort required for the tow

This is done by considering a few factors like the nature of the surface, a number of functional wheels and the overall weight of the car. Once you have figured these out, check the winching capacity of the winch.

The actual power you will need can be calculated by using simple formulas usually provided by towing companies and the winch’s handbook as well. Once you have figured out that your truck’s winch has the capacity to pull the car out of the ditch proceed further, otherwise arrange for a truck with a stronger winch.

The proper way to rig the winch

Park the track and apply the brakes and the immobilizers. Then attach the towing line to the disabled vehicle.

There are three ways of doing this:

Single line: Pull the line to the anchor point, and secure it with a strap, shackle, or a combo of the two. It can be attached to a tree, another vehicle, or steak. Lock the clutch, connect the remote, and put the line under tension. Begin winching operation with short controlled pulls.

Double line: You can use a snatch block to increase your pulling power over short distances. Connect the snatch block at the anchor point, draw your line around and attach it to your vehicle. Drape a blanket, coat, or other objects on the line once it’s tight.

Triple line: The same technique applies as the double line, the difference is that two snatch blocks and two anchor points are needed. Try to maintain a 90-degree angle between the winch and first anchor. Double check all connections before the operation. Begin winching operation with short controlled pulls while operating your vehicle.

Safety tips

People get hurt when rushing tasks, so take your time and always keep an eye on the disabled vehicle and the anchor points. Do everything gradually and pull the car free completely.

Learn to use the wrench well: In your free time, make some effort and practice using it the winch so as to be familiar with it when the need arises. Periodically, check the winch installation to ensure that all bolts are tight.

Keep winching area clean: Do not allow people to remain in the area during winching operations. Do not step over a taut wire rope or allow anyone else to do so.

Inspect wire rope and equipment frequently: The wire rope should be inspected for damage that could reduce its breaking strength. A frayed rope with broken strands should be replaced immediately. Always replace the rope with a winch recommended replacement part. Any substitution must be identical in strength, quality, lay and stranding of the original rope.

Use proper gloves: When handling or rewinding wire rope always use heavy-duty gloves to eliminate the possibility of cuts caused by burrs and slivers from broken strands.

Always have enough rope: Make sure that there are at least 5 complete turns of rope left on the drum before winching since the rope fastener will not support a heavy load.

Keep hands and fingers clear of winch rope and hook when operating winch: Never put your finger through the hook when reeling in the last few feet. If your finger should become trapped in the hook or rope, you could lose your finger. Never guide a wire rope under tension onto the drum with your hand.

When most people think of St Louis, The Arch, the blues, BBQ, and maybe hockey come to mind. But did you know that the St Louis region is home to one of the most important archaeological sites in North America?

Located a few miles directly across the Mississippi River from modern St. Louis, Missouri, you’ll find a series of mysterious mounds, the largest rising some 220 feet into the air.

Welcome to the world-renowned Cahokia Mounds.

Advanced and Peaceful

These Mounds got their name from the Cahokia tribe, which was a tribe of Illiniwek people who lived in the area when in the 17th Century the first French explorers arrived there.

At it’s height the Cahokia population in the area to be between 10 and 20 thousand people and was a peaceful agricultural, and Chiefdom led societies that were common in many of the Indian Tribes in the Midwest region. While it’s been surmised that the hamlets and villages fanned out many miles, the massive mounds were located at the center.

Representing one of the most complex remains of the northern Pre-Columbian the area was settled in the Mississippian period from 700 – 1400 AD. The expansive site covers about 9 square kilometers or 3.5 square miles which is equal to 2200 acres or 890 hectares. With 80 mounds, the site is massive, but the actual ancient city was in fact much larger than this area.

When it was occupied, the Cahokia Mounds had almost 120 mounds and covered an area of approximately 1600 hectares or 3950 acres. and width of this mound it is 30m tall, 290m length, and 255m wide respectively.

Arial View of the Cahokia Mounds

The Cahokia Were Coppersmiths

In 2002 till 2010 because of the excavation near mound 34, a copper workshop was revealed in this area. Originally discovered by archaeologist Gregory Perino in the 1850s but its exact location was lost or forgotten for around 60 years. While there are other Mississippian sites as well that can be found in the U.S, what makes this site different from all those historic sites is the fact that it contains a copper workshop, which the other sites do not have.

Protected Status

Realizing the significance of the site, the Cahokia Mounds were first protected by the Illinois state in 1923, the same year when the legislature announced that the state park would be purchased. The state government in turn designated the Cahokia Mounds and a State Historic Site in 1979 and is a designated site for protection, and also a National Historic Landmark. Finally in 1982 the Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site was included in the list of the 23 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the United States.

The Illinois Historic Preservation Division administers the site since it is open to the public site and the Cahokia Mounds Museum Society supports the site. The central focus of the city and also the largest structure of the Cahokia Mounds is the Monks Mound.

The Monks Mound is 10 stories tall, with four terraces and hence it becomes the largest man-made mound on earth located at the north of Mexico.

Living in St Louis, it’s hard not to notice the grandeur of America’s tallest memorial, the Saint Louis Arch, which measures an imposing 630-foot high and dominates our skyline. Also known as the “Gateway to the West”, it’s listed as tallest arch in the world.

While the monument is obviously large and impressive in it’s architecture, you might be unaware of some mind blowing facts about St Louis Arch from it’s concept to the actual model.

It’s just as wide as it is tall

Yeah! You read it right, this arch is as wide as it is tall. Just like its height of 630-foot, the wide base is also 630-foot. Such design with legs wider than its upper section is labeled as the weighted catenary.

No one died during the construction

We know that it sounds a bit weird but it’s the truth that no one died during the construction of this phenomenal monument. The firm that was assigned to construct this project predicted that around 13 people will die but the reality turns out to be pleasing.

The construction required only 2% of the predicted labor

It sounds a bit weird that how come this gigantic monument was constructed with 2% of the predicted labor number. Labors went wild when around only hundreds were called instead of 5000 predicted labor vacancies to build the Arch.

You can’t take the stairs

Although there are stairs to the top, visitors can’t use them as they are for emergencies and maintenance. A total of 1076 stairs will take you to the top only if you are among the engineers or workers.

Arch is heavy

The total weight of St Louis Arch is 43,220 pounds including the stainless steel, concrete layers, and all other components. Now stop daydreaming about being a superman and lifting this arch up, it’s hefty!

Eero died before the grand opening of this Arch

You heard it right, Eero, the designer of this monument didn’t see the this Arch come to life as he died of brain tumor in 1961 at the age of 51. The Arch was up four years after his death, isn’t life unjust sometimes?

Ever thought of climbing the Arch? You better not

In 1992 on September 14th a 25-year old man named John C. Vincent climbed to the top of St Louis Arch by using suction cups and parachuted back to the ground. John was charged with two crime, parachuting in a national park and climbing a national monument.

Attraction for millions

St Louis Arch is one of the most visited places by tourists with around four million visitors per year and around 1 million make it to the top of the Arch. So? Would you make it to the top or just watch like other 3 million people?

Foundation matters

This enormous monument’s foundation is approximately 60 feet deep to withstand the weight of 43,220 pounds so that this structure remains like this forever.
